MCPD Workstation

Following a request from European Commission, the Panel of Contaminants in the Food Chain was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the risks for human health related to the presence of 3- and 2- monochloropropanediol (MCPD), and their fatty acid esters, and a glycidyl fatty acid esters (GE) in food.
MCPD esters and GE are formed endogenously during vegetable oil refining process.

Then, their concentration were experimented during subsequent food processing methods, especially frying and baking. This review discussed the occurrence of 2-, 3-MCPD esters and GE during frying and baking processes. Process temperature, process duration, presence of precursors, and their combined effects are highly related to MCPD esters and GE formations.

3-MCPD is suspected of damaging DNA and causing cancer. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) specifies 2 µg/kg body weight as the tolerable daily intake level for 3-MCPD. A harmful effect is also suspected for 2-MCPD. This has already been demonstrated for glycidol.

Solutions overviews

Labotics Italia, VAR of Axel Semrau, has available a complete workstation for the fully automatic determination of MCPD and glycidol in food.

The advantages of measuring with the CHRONECT Workstation MCPD are:

  • Automation of the four common methods: ISO 18363-1, ISO 18363-2, ISO 18363-3 and Draft ISO 18363-4
  • System upgradable to changes in the standards and to all methods
  • Improvement of turnaround time
  • High accuracy and reproducibility
  • No carryover due to Robotic Tool Change technology
  • Low blank values due to optimized workflow
  • Manufacturer-independent concept
  • Specially trained support team
  • Low maintenance due to clean technology with ISO 18363-1
